STEP 1 – GET YOUR DOMAIN
A domain name is the web address (url) where customers can find you. You need one to be able to tell your customers where to find your wondrous website on the internet
Think about your domain name. A domain name:
- needs to be unique
- should be as short as possible
- is easy to remember
- is not ambiguous in its spelling
- preferably shouldn’t contain hyphens/dashes
The hardest bit these days is to find a domain name that is still free. There are various places where you can check the availability of a domain name. If it free, you can buy it straight away.
Try GoDaddy, Iinet or iPage for instance. Or do a google search on: “domain name”. It is good to shop around because prices vary quite a bit.
STEP 2 – HOST YOUR SITE
Hosting is where you store all the files associated with your website. When people visit your url, this is where the website will be loaded from.
There are many different hosting plans and companies where you can buy hosting space. You usually choose to host your website at the same company where you also bought your domain, or you can choose to do it somewhere else. It doesn’t really matter. Prices vary quite a bit. In general, if you are looking for a simple site that doesn’t need to do anything fancy, the smallest hosting plans (with shared hosting space) is usually just fine. Hosting space is just like a car, the more you spend on it, the more you get. If you are looking for heavy websites with many visitors or that need to do a lot of thinking/computing, then you need to start looking into dedicated hosting environments. It is usually not a problem to start out with a small hosting plan, and upgrade to a bigger plan (thus getting more server power) once it becomes necessary.
If this is your first time, we would advice you to host with a company where you can install WordPress, as this is what you will going to be using later on.
STEP 3 – INSTALL CMS
A CMS is a Content Management System. You will use this to be able to add and update the content of your website.
With a CMS you can manage all the items on your website. This includes pages, menus, blog content, banners, texts, pictures, videos, etc. Basically all information and visuals you want to display to your visitors. If you are looking for an easy full functional CMS, we recommend using WordPress. This is easy to use, contains loads of features and can usually be installed with the press of a button from your hosting provider’s admin console.
STEP 4 – CHOOSE A THEME
A theme is a great way to get a cool look and feel for your website. There are almost unlimited themes to choose from, so there is bound to be one to your liking. Some themes are free, but most themes require a one time purchase. A good place to start looking for a theme is themeforest.
